Three Sentence Ficathon 2021

We have now opened a new post, for new prompts! Please leave all new prompts there. You may continue to fill existing prompts here. If you didn't get a prompt filled here, feel free to post it on the new post!

Welcome to the Three Sentence Ficathon!
2 Feb. 2021 See important edit below regarding where to find unfilled prompts.

What is the 3 Sentence Ficathon?
This is an open exchange where you answer a prompt with a fic consisting of only three sentences. It's open to all fandoms and you can post and fill as many prompts as you like, as many times as you want.

What do I do first?
You can start 3SF by posting prompts! When posting a prompt please format it this way:

fandom, character(s), prompt word/sentence.

Only one prompt per comment please. So, for example,

Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi, I don't like sand."

Open ended and anthropomorphic fills are popular too, such as:

Any, Any, "I don't like sand."

or

Earth geography, sand, "I don't like humans very much, either."

What happens after that?
You answer other posters' prompts in three sentences (or more if you can't stop yourself) and fill as many prompts as you want, as many times as you wish. If you see that a prompt you loved has already been filled, go ahead and fill it again! Multiple fills of the same prompt are allowed and even encouraged! (We get really fun stories going this way).

Can I still post if I need more than 3 sentences? Or should I just abuse grammar in ways the English language never contemplated?
Yes. Yes.

But I'm not a member of Dreamwidth
No problem. You can comment anonymously or through open ID

I'm really overwhelmed by all the prompts and how much there is and how fast it goes. I can't read 1,000 prompts and fills. It's too much.
I hear this a lot and it keeps a lot of people from participating.  The 3SF is big and it moves fast, especially at first.
I get overwhelmed, too, and I'm hosting the thing. With 2020 and 2021 sucking so badly you don't want something that's supposed to be fun cause you anxiety.  I have a couple of suggestions for managing the 3SF volume.
  • First, really, you don't have to read every prompt and fill on every page.  You can start at the last page of this and just go forward, or back a page or two.  It's fine.
  • You can come and go as time and energy allow, you don't have to participate the whole time, and it drops off quite a bit by mid-February.
  • Even after the 3SF and new prompting end, people fill prompts all year long.
  • You can fill an already filled prompt and you can can leave a prompt that's already been prompted before.  People do it all the time.
Always make sure you're looking at top-level comments only, not threaded. That helps a lot. Your screen should look like this.

But shouldn't I read everything to see if someone already prompted the same prompt I want to leave if someone already filled it?

No.  Prompt as many times as you want, as much as you want.  It doesn't matter if someone prompted the exact same prompt.  Go ahead and prompt again!

I left a prompt and no one filled it.  Can I prompt it again?
Absolutely!

Can I spread the word?
Yes, please. I generally fail at creating banners and embed codes but if you create one and make it really idiot-proof, I might be able to post and share it.  Feel free to cross-post this entry. If you create your own banners or icons, let me know and I'll share!
Please share the 3SF with your followers, friends, and any channels and comms you are active on.  I'll post on fandom calendar, Tumblr, and Twitter, but I don't have many connections in other spaces such as Discord.

How long will it go?

The 3SF closes to new prompts on February 28, 2021. The entry stays open permanently and people post fills all year long.

Are there any rules about cross-posting?
Nope, you can post wherever you want, whenever you want. A lot of folks collected their responses together and posted them on AO3 under the 3 sentence fiction tag. 3SFs are a terrific prompt for remixes and could be helpful for Yuletide bears, too.

What about spoilers, content and archive warnings, triggers, pairings, ratings, tags, and squick?
I thought a lot about this. It boils down to reader beware.  In my experience, this typically gets too big, moves too fast, and the stories are too short for content warnings and ratings to even apply. It is too big for me to moderate in this way. You should assume spoilers are fair game and that the initial poster and the responder have opted to use no content warnings or tags. This means AO3 content warnings for dubcon, violence, canon character death, underage, etc. COULD be present. I've found personally that I can skim and scroll by stuff that, from the prompt, I can tell isn't my favorite flavor of delicious cake. Use your best judgment and be prepared to skip over things that aren't your thing. In this format, the obligation is on you, the reader, to protect yourself from triggering content.
Some posters do include warnings and spoiler tags in subject lines or include spoiler space, but they don't have to do so.

Why is 3SF split among several posts?  That seems confusing.
It is confusing and we always lose momentum once we have to move to a second post. The reason is because at 5,000 comments to a single post, DW installs a human test CAPTCHA, which is a pain for users.  So, once this entry gets to the upper 4,000 comments, I open a new post.  If you've been waiting until things slow down to participate, when we open a second post is often a good place to join.

If I have questions, what do I do?

I'm rthstewart everywhere, here, Twitter, Tumblr, gmail and AO3.

A special thank you to [personal profile] conuly  .
Last year, Conuly started logging all unfilled prompts.
This year's (2021) unfilled prompts are here.
Last year's (2020) unfilled prompts are here.
Conuly asks that you not reply, as they want to be able to edit and add more prompts to the list.
Conuly does this just because they are an awesome person but should you want to write them fic in thanks, you can find a birthday wish list here.

Here is the 3SF 2021 Friending Meme to show of your new DW account.

Here, have some icons and banners and let me know if you've created your own!

let her fly

Meg works in the hot kitchen, listening to the twins bicker as John does the books at his desk. She shapes the loaves and sets them to rise, and glances out the window as she dusts the flour from her hands, catching sight of a hawk as it swoops across the sky, and a sudden mad impulse hits her, to tear off her apron and dash out of the house and just go, somewhere, anywhere, a place where she can be free.

But the twins are running to her, clinging to her skirts and calling "mama look!" and when she looks at John, he's smiling at her warmly, so Meg remembers she's a dove, and home is its own kind of freedom.

Furiosa has never seen herself; oh, she's seen her own hands of course, or the warped shape of a face in a bit of twisted, half rusted metal, or the half-present mirage when she manages to pool just enough water in her hands, but that's not the same thing.

The scars are long since faded on Toast's skin, the burns from the raging sun long since vanished from years of confinement inside, even the thin, wiry shape that is the only way to survive alone in the wasteland has given way to the softness of a cow trapped in a paddock, but that all drops away, irrelevant, when Furiosa meets her eyes; they are hard, calculating, filled with the brutal determination to do whatever it takes to survive, to win.

When they meet each other's eyes, they see only themselves reflected back.

It's not as if she never held something delicate or that gives with the barest press of her thumb, but there is something about the items in the Vault that unsettle Toast. Pillows might be a comfort to her head, but the fabric that clothes them disturbs her--thin veils, delicate sleeves, soft against her chest.

Easy to tear.

Toast misses the scratch of her old clothes, the molded hardness of her boots, and even the callouses on her hands after she is trapped for long enough. Just to be spiteful, she stays in the sun until her skin burns and flakes, just for some friction under her fingers once more.

On reflection, Paddington probably wasn't entirely to blame for what happened, although it would have been obvious to anyone that a partially open door and the smell of marmalade coming from inside would have been a strong draw for the little bear. As it was, a thief, sneaking downstairs from stealing the old woman's jewellry while she was busy making the marmalade, had not been expecting to meet a bear at the bottom of the stairs, who had raised his hat and politely asked what the thief was doing. Panicked, the thief had slipped on a loose stair runner and fallen down the stairs, knocking himself out when he hit his head on the grandfather clock at the bottom.

Dissidia, Sephiroth + Kefka + Kuja

[personal profile] fallen_stage 2021-02-02 08:29 am (UTC)(link)
"What is the purpose of these beads?" Sephiroth asked, fingering the string at his belt, the only purely ornamental part of his outfit aside from his hair.

"They're a holdover from magical accessories," Kuja replied without looking up from his poetry. he was reading an epic, about a bestial man, a king, and their relationship and adventures. "not unlike your materia."

"Any mage worth her salt should have a rosary of spells on her person!" Kefka crowed from where he was perched on the bookcase, ripping embroidery thread with his teeth. The doll he was working on had long white hair, but without the clothes and only half the face, it was hard to say who it was supposed to be.

Sephiroth looked thoughtful; which is to say, he stared intently at the beads like they might crack under the weight of his gaze. The beads remained resolute, however, so Kuja deigned to add his own look toward Sephiroth.

"The early history of synthesizing on Gaia started as a way for mages to preserve and pass on their spells, so that a mage could reach master of a spell in a matter of weeks instead of years. These first items were beads, which were easy to imbue and easy to carry, but much more difficult to make and far more fragile than modern spelled items."

Kuja neatly ducked a thimble tossed by Kefka, allowing it to clatter on the floor. Let him jump down and bat after it like the cat he was mimicking by being way up there.

"You're as bad as him! You both must have strong stomachs, since you two clearly swallowed an encyclopedia or ten."

Kuja was about to ask archly if Kefka felt like condensing the history of magic into an easily digestible bite instead when Sephiroth asked another question.

"Then, do your uniforms hold the same principle?"

Kuja and Kefka rolled their eyes at each other. Sephiroth was raised in a strict military cum laboratory environment, so he was allotted some leniency as the pair understood at least half of it, but he sadly couldn't recognize fashion choices if it waved a spotted scarlet scarf in his face.

"You may have swallowed a set of encyclopedias, but you've got a long way to go!"

Kuja, ever the more tactful of the group, made mental note to make a brief report on sartorial history for Sephiroth to peruse.

Fallen London, Player/Lucy of Hunter’s Keep

“It’s like the moon,” says Phoebe, “lone and lost,” and Cynthia calls it a shadowed path through a tangled wood, but Lucy knows the truth: love is caprice and charm, the ridiculous made beautiful and the impossible made real. Tonight, their sweet zee-captain is hers, and she spins for them a tale that leaves them laughing, of her past suitor and an act at Mahogany Hall gone improbably wrong.

They’re not her own lost love, and they know she won’t be going home, but they were never jealous, and it’s always been the story that matters; they’ll steal a dirigible for her, they promise, if she wants to fly again – but the goat, she’ll have to acquire on her own.

“Let me if I’ve understood this correctly,” it was rare for Xemnas to wear any sort of expression that wasn’t smug, but the scouting report from the Organization’s best and brightest could only surface memories of startled disbelief. “You are telling me that we unleashed countless heartless onto this trite peasant world, only for all of them to flee back through the Door to Darkness because of a catapult, the world's largest lightbulb, and - what was the last one? A platypus? They don’t even do much!”

Xaldin, Vexen, and Lexaeus, the Organization’s best and brightest, shared grim looks, before Lexaeus, the designated speaker of the group, stepped forward. “He kicked the world's largest light bulb through the door... it's still stuck, sir.”

Taking over the Tri-State Area was going to be difficult.

Thorns and Honeysuckle (original)

[personal profile] edenfalling 2021-03-04 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
The end of the story always puzzled Dina -- "And the briars became red roses and the woodbine became white roses, and they cast petals and perfume upon the air as the castle woke from sleep," her grandmother would say, with a firm nod of her head and a callused finger pointed toward the castle walls, so thickly covered in leaves and flowers that they seemed more like a hill grown soft and natural from the ground than anything humans built on purpose -- because the point of the briars and woodbine was to fence people out with thorns and interwoven vines; the curse's end should have softened those defenses, but the royal roses still had plenty of thorns.

Come to that, woodbine was just a fancy name people used for honeysuckle when they didn't want to tiptoe that half-inch too close to nursing livestock and other bodily functions -- and nobody ever said honeysuckle wasn't pretty or smelled anything but sweet, so there was no need to look elsewhere for perfume either.

These days, Dina peered at the thick tangle of greenery and thorns every time she hauled firewood through the castle gates, and smiled to herself to see the quiet gold of honeysuckle still twining amidst the roses and their blood-tipped thorns.
